The 2-day/1-night Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a condensed yet unforgettable trek, perfect for those seeking a shorter but equally rewarding experience. The journey begins with an early morning hotel pickup in Cusco between 4:00 a.m. and 4:15 a.m., followed by a scenic drive to the Ollantaytambo train station. From there, we board a train that follows the Urubamba River for approximately 1.5 hours, eventually arriving at the Inca Trail checkpoint, where our trek begins.
Crossing a footbridge, we hike at the Chachabamba ruins, an ancient site known for its impressive water channels and fountains. After a brief exploration, we begin a four-hour ascent, traversing breathtaking overlooks of the valley and passing a stunning waterfall before reaching Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young)—one of the most remarkable Inca sites along the trail. Here, we ascend through intricately designed terraces and ritual baths before merging onto the main Inca Trail.
As we continue, we navigate steep mountainsides and narrow stairways, passing through a lush cloud forest filled with giant ferns and broad-leaf vegetation. Eventually, we arrive at the Inti Punku (Sun Gate), greeted by a spectacular panoramic view of Machu Picchu, framed by towering peaks and the winding Urubamba River below.
The final stretch of our trek takes us along the royal flagstone walkway, passing shrines and outlying structures, before arriving at the heart of Machu Picchu. After exploring the citadel, we descend to Aguas Calientes by bus, where you may opt to stay overnight in a hotel for further exploration the next day.
Hike Details:
This short yet exhilarating trek perfectly balances adventure, history, and breathtaking scenery.
After an early breakfast, we will aim to catch the first bus at 5:30 a.m. from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, arriving at the site around 6:00 a.m. The 30-minute ride winds through the lush mountains, leading us to the entrance of this legendary Inca citadel. As we arrive, we will witness the breathtaking sight of Machu Picchu slowly emerging from the morning mist, bathed in the first golden rays of sunlight.
We will then embark on a 2.5-hour guided tour, exploring the sanctuary-city of Machu Picchu, where you will learn about its fascinating history, architectural wonders, and the daily life of the Incas. After the tour, you will have time to explore the ruins at your own pace, taking in this ancient wonder’s awe-inspiring scenery and energy. For those seeking more adventure, an optional hike to the top of Huayna Picchu is available, offering spectacular panoramic views of Machu Picchu from above.
After our visit, we will take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time to gather your belongings and prepare for your afternoon train ride back to Ollantaytambo. From there, a transfer will bring you back to Cusco, with an expected arrival time of 9:00 p.m. If you wish, a hotel reservation can be arranged for a comfortable overnight stay in Cusco.
